Ordering from a Thai restaurant menu

Read the dishes, accompaniments and available changes.

Start with the dish description

Read the current menu rather than choosing only by a familiar name. Ask staff about the main ingredients, preparation and serving format of an unfamiliar dish. Different restaurants can offer different versions and combinations.

Check the accompaniments

Find out whether rice or another accompaniment comes with the dish or needs a separate order. Check the available ingredient and protein choices and how additions are charged. Compare complete meals rather than assuming similar menu prices include the same items.

Discuss preferences before preparation

Explain ingredient restrictions and your spice preference directly to staff. Ask which changes the kitchen can make for the particular dish. A vegetarian description, familiar sauce name or menu symbol does not answer every ingredient question.

Build a manageable meal

For a first visit, choose a small selection and ask whether portions are suitable for sharing. Confirm the dish names, choices and accompaniments when ordering. If you are uncertain, describe what you enjoy and ask staff to explain a suitable option.
