Discussing spice at a Thai restaurant

Use the restaurant’s own options and ask about the dish.

Check the restaurant scale

Ask how that restaurant describes its spice options instead of assuming a label matches another place. Explain your usual preference in plain language. If a dish is unfamiliar, ask staff what produces the heat and how adjustable it is.

Ask about the particular dish

Confirm whether the kitchen can change the preparation or whether some ingredients are already combined. Ask before placing the order, especially for a group. Do not assume that every dish can be made to the same level.

Keep individual choices separate

When ordering for several people, identify which dish belongs to which guest and repeat the agreed choices. If sharing, make sure everyone understands the selection. Ask whether sauces or other additions can be served separately where that helps your plan.

Check the order on arrival

For takeout, ask staff to identify containers with different preparations or changes. For dining in, raise an unexpected dish with the server before passing plates around. Keep any ingredient restriction discussion separate from a simple preference about heat.
